Lookine west at the fields of 'Araby', the 240 acre farm of C. Keefer Thomas. Confederate General john B. Gordon launched a successful flank attack across these fields that, after heavy fighting, forced Union forces to retreat and eventually leave the field. But their sacrifice stalled the Confederates a vital day to rush defenders to Washington D.C. |
This monument was erected by the State of Vermont to designate the position of the 10th Vermont Infantry during the battle fought here on the ninth day of July 1864 to save Washington, "and we saved it." Seven companies occupied the Washington Pike, while three companies occupied the Buckeystown Road opposite the Thomas House.
